The Project
Barcroft secured planning permission for a 68-bed purpose-built care home as part of a wider consortium-led residential urban extension in Taunton.
Following the grant of planning permission, Barcroft acquired the site and is responsible for delivering the care home on behalf of its operating partner, Amica Care Trust.
The two-storey care home has been designed to provide high-quality accommodation and care within the new residential community, ensuring that the development forms an integrated part of the wider urban extension.
The project is being delivered through Mercroft, a joint venture development partnership, with funding provided by Aberdeen Investments. Lawrence Baker has been appointed as contractor, with construction now underway and completion anticipated in Q3 2026.
The Location
Comeytrowe urban extension, branded as Orchard Grove, is a major mixed-use garden community development on the south-west edge of Taunton, Somerset. It spans a 118-hectare agricultural site between the A38 Wellington Road and Honiton Road, delivering 2,000 new homes, a primary school, a 300-space park-and-bus facility, care home and commercial workspace.
Barcroft's Role
Barcroft was responsible for securing full planning permission for the care home, acquiring the site and progressing the scheme through to construction and delivery.
Working through the Mercroft joint venture, Barcroft has coordinated the development alongside the wider consortium and its project partners, with Amica Care Trust appointed as operator, Aberdeen Investments providing the funding and Lawrence Baker appointed as contractor.
The project demonstrates Barcroft’s ability to identify and unlock care development opportunities within larger strategic developments, taking schemes from planning through acquisition and into delivery with established funding and operating partners.
